Types of GPS Antennas
1. Many Types of GPS Antennas
Research shows that there are over 20 types of GPS antennas worldwide. GPS receiver antennas have different structural types, such as monopole, dipole, spiral, microstrip, and choke coil. Patch antennas are a type of microstrip antenna.
2. What are the main types of GPS antennas?
1. Based on polarization, GPS antennas are categorized into vertical polarization and circular polarization. Based on current technology, circular polarization offers better performance. Therefore, except in special circumstances, GPS module antennas all use circular polarization.
2. Based on installation and placement, GPS antennas are categorized into internal and external antennas. As GPS modules become increasingly miniaturized and integrated, GPS module antennas are often installed and placed internally. In this case, the antenna must be above all metal components, the housing must be electroplated and well grounded, and away from EMI interference sources, such as the CPU, SDRAM, SD card, crystal oscillator, and DC/DC converter.
3. Based on power supply, GPS antennas are categorized into active and passive antennas. Passive antennas do not include low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) and do not require a power supply. However, because unamplified GPS signals are weak, the cable length from the passive antenna to the receiver is generally no longer than 1 meter.
An active GPS antenna is typically a powered antenna module consisting of a ceramic antenna, an LNA (low-noise amplifier), cables, connectors, and a waterproof seal, also known as a G-mouse.
